Wixie Screen Time Recommendations

Make screen time creative time!

The amount of screen time matters. But the quality of that screen time matters more. When students use a device, that time should have a clear instructional purpose and engage them actively in learning.

Wixie is designed for active, creative screen time. In Wixie, the student is the author, artist, narrator, designer, and presenter. Rather than consuming videos or other prebuilt content, students use Wixie to make something that demonstrates learning: writing, drawing, recording, explaining, and publishing work.

How is Wixie typically used?

Typical Wixie usage falls into two categories: digital learning in a lab setting or classroom curriculum integration.

In a lab or media center setting for technology instruction, Wixie is used by every student each time they visit for the duration of students’ computer class period.

When Wixie is being implemented to supplement classroom curriculum instruction as a tool for students to produce learning artifacts, it is generally used two or more times a week for the duration of the project work.

Recommended weekly use Common implementation Flexibility
About 2 hours per week Two 1-hour sessions May be divided into shorter sessions based on grade level and instructional practice

How do teachers evaluate student learning in Wixie?

With Wixie, AI doesn’t evaluate student work, their teacher does. Teachers are connected to their student's accounts, so they can monitor progress, provide feedback during the creation process, and evaluate student learning.

Wixie does not treat minutes logged in as a proxy for learning.

Is student usage and duration available in reports for administrators?

Administrators can view and export Wixie usage numbers by school, grade, teacher, and student. Teachers can view the usage of students in their connected classes.

Administrators can export usage reports that include projects created, visits, and total logged-in duration. Logged-in duration should be interpreted as a usage metric rather than a precise measure of active screen time, since browser behavior, inactive tabs, and other factors can affect session-duration reporting.

Where do our recommendations come from?

Wixie was developed for schools requesting a browser-based version of another Tech4Learning product, Pixie. Since Pixie would still be available as desktop software, the browser version took its new name from “web Pixie,” or Wixie.

Recommendations for usage are based on information from the Pixie Effectiveness Study. Learn more about the Wixie’s design principles and research basis.
